Frequently Asked Questions

I already have solar. Do I need storage?

No, but it does have benefits! Pairing your solar array with energy storage, such as chemical batteries, allows you to use energy generated during the solar day when the sun goes down. This helps in reducing dependence on the grid and demand charges and your overall energy bill.

Will I be able to fulfill 100% of my electricity needs from solar?

You can ensure 100% of your electricity needs are met by solar by incorporating a storage system to handle demand when the sun goes down. Think of how a portable phone charger can give your phone juice when you don't have access to a wall outlet.

I heard solar pays for itself. How long would that take?

Payback periods depend upon your energy needs, the size of your energy system, and the incentives you are eligible for. Nearly all solar systems pay for themselves within ten years, with many paying for themselves in fewer than five years.

What solar energy rebates and incentives are available?

Solar rebates and incentives vary depending on where you live. The most significant is the 30 percent federal investment tax credit (ITC), which allows you to deduct 30 percent of the cost of your solar energy system from your taxes. Some states offer additional tax credits, and certain municipalities and utilities also offer cash rebates or other incentives. Speak with your certified tax professional for more information regarding your options.

What are my solar financing options?

There are three solar financing options: you can purchase your system in cash, take out a solar loan to buy your system, or sign a solar lease/power purchase agreement (PPA).

Why would I want a stationary battery for my building?

Batteries can be used to store excess solar-generated power for use through the night when power is more expensive. This allows you to potentially run your residence or building on 100% solar generated power. Additionally, adding a stationary battery will allow your building to run independently from the electrical grid.

Do I need solar panels to have a stationary battery?

No, batteries can save you money by providing load shifting. The battery charges from grid electricity when the power is the cheapest and discharges to your home or building when the grid power is the most expensive.

I’m familiar with batteries. Are there other types of energy storage available?

There are many types of storage available. Chemical batteries are the most popular, however there are other systems available such as hydrogen gas, pumped hydro, flywheels, and many more. Wooster Energy Engineering is equipped to assist you in determining which form of energy storage is best for your needs.

Is my solar safe during an earthquake or high winds?

Yes! We install the highest rated panels and racking systems in the U.S. These panels are earthquake safe and will be able to withstand high winds. Your solar array is completely secure on your roof.
